EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. It is an evidence-based practice scientifically proven to reduce anxiety and assist in managing many other emotions. A major benefit to EFT is that once you learn the technique you can practice the technique independently and access its benefits anytime without having to wait for an appointment with your coach or therapist.
The technique involves tapping on meridian points while rehearsing dialogue that first accepts the emotional state that you find yourself in. Then the dialogue offers an alternative to your current emotional state.
This technique was first used in veterans suffering with PTSD. I stumbled across the technique when I was afflicted with severe nerve pain. I was having unwelcome side effects from the typical treatments for neuropathic pain. Opiates were initiated but were not effective. I did experience the side effects of the opiates. I went on an internet search for an alternative and found EFT.
Practicing the technique was helpful with the pain. Through my research I found that there was evidence that EFT had remarkable success in treating anxiety. Further investigation led me to the work of Nick and Jessica Ortner and The Tapping Solution. It turns out that EFT is also effective on other emotions that were found to be intrusive.
While working toward my Bachelor Degree, I did a research paper on EFT and the possibility of utilizing it in my hospice work. If you are interested in more data, you are welcome to look it over. The Treatment of PTSD with Emotional Freedom Technique
EFT is a modality that I offer when working with clients.
